Breast Lift vs Implants – What is The Best Option For You?

Beer commercials, Victoria Secret ads, People Magazine covers, and every women’s fashion designer can tell you: breasts are a big deal. They come in all shapes and sizes, and women everywhere try life hacks like tape and custom bras to capture that ideal breast shape that they always see in advertisements. The truth is that almost no woman has breasts that look like that naturally, especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

There are many reasons why women consider breast lifts or implants. If you are internally debating breast lift vs implants for yourself, here are a few things that you need to know.

The Benefits of Breast Implants

When it comes to the breast lift vs implants debate, many celebrities opt for implants in order to achieve the size and shape that they are after. Celebrities who undergo breast implants often become more empowered to wear unique and fearless outfits.

However, there are many other reasons why women want breast implants. In some cases, they were simply born with small breasts and decided to modify their chest because they wanted to have breasts. Author and poet Lucy Grealy discussed “treating herself” to breast augmentation in order to get in touch with her feminie side after a lifetime of disfiguring surgeries. Other women, especially those involved in fitness modeling, may lose breast tissue when they take up weight lifting. For example, Lauren from Thousand Faces Cosplay got implants in order to correct the loss of breast tissue and to balance out her figure.

It is also common for transgender women and women who have battled breast cancer to get implants. Many people prefer implants over other breast enhancements because implants are long-lasting, customizable, and can really put women in touch with their feminine energy.

While there are certainly horror stories about breast implants, there are also millions of women out there who love their new breasts and feel as happy and confident as ever! The key to having a safe and satisfying procedure is to only go to board-certified cosmetic physicians like Dr. Nadir Qazi and his team of plastic surgeons for treatment!

    Breast Implants: An Overview

Breast augmentation can be reconstructive or cosmetic, but the actual procedure is the same regardless of your reasons. The procedure is highly customizable to suit your individual needs and preferences. When you have your initial consultation, your doctor will take into account your natural body shape, your aesthetic goals, and your medical history.

    Types of Implants

There are several options for breast augmentation, including saline implants, silicone implants, or “gummy bear” implants that are a type of silicone gel. Most cosmetic surgeons prefer what is called the “ideal implant” because it is made of a silicone shell and filled with saline. This type of implant is desirable because it easily settles into a natural-looking shape, presents few risks, and is easy to insert and then remove if necessary.

Another option is fat transfer. Similar to the Brazilian Butt Lift, this procedure involves taking fat from other areas – like the stomach or the thighs – and reimplanting it into the breasts. While this option is generally safer and less complicated, the results are not as dramatic and striking. Depending on how subtle – or not subtle – you want your results to be, fat transfer may not be the right choice for you.

    Incision Points

Incisions are most often made under the armpit, around the nipple, or on the fold where the bottom of the breast meets the chest. Incisions made at the bottom of the breast often leave the most visible scars, which can give away that you have had implants. If you do not want tell-tale scarring, then armpit incisions or nipple incisions will be a better option to keep your chest smooth and free of visible scarring.

    Characteristics to Consider

In addition to customizing the incision points and the material of your implants, you can also customize the size, shape, and texture of your new breasts. In general, cosmetic physicians do not recommend increasing your size by more than two cup sizes. Doing so can risk back pain and an unnatural look if the implants do not fit to your frame. Another consideration is roundness and texture.

Insertion: Above or Below the Pectoral Muscle?

Implants can be inserted above the pectoral muscle or below it. While implants below the muscle look and feel the most natural, the process is much more involved and will require a greater recovery time. On the other hand, implants placed above the muscle are more obvious as implants, but are associated with a faster and more comfortable recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Implants

Who is the ideal candidate for implants?

The ideal candidate is someone who is in good health and who fully understands the benefits and risks of breast implants. In general, it is recommended that patients do ample research and  consult with Dr. Qazi before choosing to undergo a procedure. Patients who have underlying health conditions, allergies to silicone or saline, are pregnant or nursing, and who have active breast cancer should not receive implants.

Additionally, it can be dangerous for patients under the age of 18 to receive breast implants due to the need for their breasts to be fully developed before the surgery and because it may present risks to their social and emotional development. For people who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder, breast augmentation is not recommended.

The best way to find out if you fit the criteria to safely undergo breast augmentation is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Qazi.

What Are the Risks and Side Effects?

The most common side effects include: changes in how the nipples and breasts feel, loss of sensation in the breasts, developing a capsular contracture, and slight breast pain.

Other complications can include: inability to breastfeed, infection, inflammation, rupture or leakage of the implants (saline and silicone), ptosis (drooping), and deformation of the breast shape. Additionally, it is important to be aware of surgery-related risks, like blood clotting, infection, and allergic reaction to the materials used in the surgery.

The best way to avoid adverse side effects is to:

      1. Only receive treatments from an experienced, board-certified physician
      2. Follow all pre-op instructions to the letter
      3. Follow all aftercare instruction and take it easy after the procedure
      4. Contact your doctor immediately if you feel unwell or have other concerns

What is the Recovery Timeline Like? What Should I Do For Aftercare?

When you are discharged, you will be prescribed pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infections. You will also be given a support garment, and may need to clean and apply ointment to the incision areas.

For the first few days, it is very important that you take it easy to avoid bleeding. The acute pain typically goes away after 5 days and the soreness will decrease after a few weeks.

Even once the pain and swelling subside, it will take a few months for your implants to settle into their final shape. During this time, it is recommended that you take it easy and follow all your surgeon’s instructions. After a few months, you will see your results and you will be able to enjoy your new figure for 10 to 20 years.

What is a Breast Lift? What is the Difference Between a Breast Lift vs Implants?

A breast lift is a different type of breast-enhancing surgery that is designed to lift severely sagging breasts and improve overall shape and appearance. In general, breast implants are best for increasing the size of the breasts or improving the shape. This procedure, on the other hand, is primarily about adjusting the shape rather than increasing the size.

      Breast lifts can fix:

      • Sagging breasts
      • Loss of shape
      • Decrease in volume
      • Downward pointing nipples
      • Enlarged areolas
      • Uneven breast position

This procedure is primarily popular among women who have given birth and breastfed, or who have lost a lot of weight. Many women have found themselves in the situation where they have had kids, then they feel disconnected from their body, un-feminine, and uncomfortable with their sexuality because of their body. A breast lift is an ideal solution to this common problem because it can subtly adjust your breasts, while your beautiful figure and appearance remain the same.

What To Expect During Your Procedure

      1. You will need to stop taking blood thinners 2 weeks before the procedure, quit smoking 4 weeks beforehand, and abstain from alcohol for 1 week. Your surgeon may also recommend stopping the use of self-tanning products in the weeks before the surgery.
      1. There are several different methods for this procedure:
        1. The Crescent Lift: the incision is made on the upper portion of the nipple, running halfway around the edge of the areola
        2. Peri-Areolar Lift: a circular incision is made around the entire edge of the areola and excess skin is removed in a donut shape. This will also decrease the size of the areola.
        3. The Vertical Lift: the first incision is around the perimeter of the areola and the second incisions runs vertically to the bottom of the breast fold
        4. The Inverted T: first incision is around the areola, the second incision runs down to the breast fold, and the third incision is made in the breast crease.
      1. No matter what method is used, the procedure will involve the surgeon removing the excess skin to reshape the breast.
      1. Immediately after treatment you can expect soreness, swelling, and changes in sensation.
      1. 1-2 weeks after treatment: the surgical drains are removed, continue to wear your post-op garments, you can return to work after 1 week, and can resume exercise after 2 weeks.
      1. 3-4 weeks after: You can begin weight lifting at this time, but avoid chest exercises for 4 to 6 weeks.
      1. You can expect a full recovery after 6 weeks and you can enjoy the final, mostly permanent results after several months.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Lifts

        Who is the Ideal Candidate?

Someone who is done having children and has sagging or asymmetrical breasts, has lost volume, or has downward pointing nipples. This procedure is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who are under 18 years old.

What Are the Risks and Side Effects?

Side effects include: changes in sensation, breast shape irregularities, breast asymmetry, fat necrosis, seroma, and the potential for loss of the nipple.

While these side effects are very rare, they can occur in some cases. The best way to avoid adverse outcomes is to follow all post-op instructions and call your doctor immediately if you feel pain or discomfort.

Breast Lift vs Implants – How Do I Know Which is Right For Me?

The best way to determine if a breast lift vs implants will be right for you is to schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic. Dr. Qazi will listen to your needs and concerns, then make a recommendation for his team to Orange County cosmetic surgeons to carry out.

Here are 5 factors to consider when you are deciding between a breast lift vs implants:

        1. What Are You Trying to Fix About Your Breasts? – If you want a bigger chest with a more rounded shape, then breast implants are probably what you want. However, if you want to keep your breasts the same size the correct sagging, then a lift is your best option.
        1. Do You Want Natural or a Statement? – The results of a breast lift usually look more natural than that of a breast augmentation. While it is very possible to match your implants to your body shape, in most cases, women who undergo augmentation will need to buy bras, shirts, and dresses in their new size. On the other hand, a lift will mostly keep your breast size the same; you will just look in the mirror after showers and feel like a million bucks.
        1. What Kind of Recovery Are You Prepared For? – This question may also influence whether you should get implants that go above the muscle or below it. Because implants take time to settle and have a longer healing period, you will be out of commission for slightly longer than you would be with a lift.
        1. Do You Need Instant Results? – Both implants and a lift will require several weeks of healing time; however, immediately after a breast lift, you will notice a change in the shape of your breast. Implants, on the other hand, will take more time to settle before you can see your new shape.
        1. Why Do You Want a Breast Procedure? – Many women choose to undergo breast procedures because it makes them happier with their bodies, it can make clothes fit better, it will make up for lost volume, or for work-related purposes for women who model, cosplay, or otherwise work in front of a camera. Qazi Cosmetic Clinic prides itself on natural-looking procedures, and generally recommends that patients start small. Therefore, it might be wise to make small adjustments first until you are sure that you want the added size.
