How to Fix Uneven Breasts for Long-Lasting Results

If you have uneven breasts, you are not alone. An estimated 88% of women have breasts that are uneven in some way. 65% of women have more than one marker of breast asymmetry. The good news is that if you are unhappy with your chest, there are several permanent solutions to fix uneven breasts.

How to Fix Uneven Breasts

The best way to fix uneven breasts is with a procedure that either adds volume to the breasts to create balance or adjusts the amount of drooping. A form of breast augmentation, such as a fat transfer or implants, is the most common way to treat uneven breasts.

Breast implants are very easy to customize in terms of size and placement, so patients can have their breasts rounded out to be the same shape and size.

A fat transfer is one of the most natural options for fixing uneven breasts. This process involves taking fat from one area of the body and injecting it into the breasts. However, a fat transfer is less precise than breast implants, so some patients require multiple procedures to see their desired results.

If your breast asymmetry is not caused by a difference in volume but a difference in shape, Dr. Nadir Qazi may recommend a breast lift instead. Unlike augmentation, a breast lift does not add volume to the chest. Instead, a breast lift corrects droopiness and can adjust the positioning of the nipple.

If you have uneven breasts, schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic to learn which procedure will be best for you.

What Causes Asymmetry in the Breasts?

Asymmetrical breasts are completely normal and very common. There are several things that can cause your breasts to become uneven:

  1. Pregnancy. Breastfeeding and pregnancy is the most common cause for uneven breasts. It is also normal for breastfeeding to cause the breasts to droop and for the nipples to point downward.
  1. Genetics. Breast shape and body size is hereditary. If your mother and grandmother have uneven breasts, chances are that you will too.
  1. Hormonal imbalances. Breast asymmetry normally begins during puberty. For some women, one breast may grow more quickly than the other as the breasts develop. This is caused by your body’s estrogen levels.
  1. Trauma to the chest. Injuries to the chest can also cause the breasts to become uneven. This most commonly occurs in women who develop cysts or scar tissue in their breasts. Trauma to the chest wall from a car accident or athletic training accident can also cause the breasts to be uneven.
  1. A medical condition. There are several medical conditions that cause the breasts to be uneven. Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) is a condition where the milk ducts in the breasts grow excessively; it can affect one breast more than the other, resulting in asymmetry. Juvenile hypertrophy is another condition that results in uneven breasts; its cause is unknown, but it can be corrected with a procedure.

What Are the Best Treatments for Fixing Uneven Breasts?

There are 3 procedures that can balance your breasts: a fat transfer, breast implants, and a breast lift. Because these are medical procedures, the results are long-lasting and highly effective.

    What is a Fat Transfer?

A fat transfer is a common medical procedure that relocates fat cells from one area of the body to another. It is safe for use on many different areas of the body, including the breasts, butt, and face.

This is what you can expect when you get a fat transfer to fix uneven breasts:

    1. The procedure is normally performed under general anesthesia. You will be monitored by a team of medical professionals the entire time.
    2. Liposuction is used to remove extra fat cells from the donor area of the body. The donor area can be any part of the body that has fat cells to spare. It is the most common to take fat cells from the abdomen, thighs, waist, hips, or back.
    3. The fat cells are purified to remove any extra liquids or tissues.
    4. The pure cells are injected into the breasts to even them out. The treatment area normally only fully absorbs a fraction of the fat cells, so it is a common practice for doctors to overinject.
    5. After the procedure, you can expect to take up to a week off work. It will take 2 more weeks to recover enough to return to normal activities, including exercise. You will be fully recovered within 8-12 weeks, and the fat will continue to settle for about 6 months.

Am I a good candidate for a fat transfer?

A fat transfer is one of the most natural and least invasive procedures for correcting breast asymmetry; however, it is not right for everyone. In order to be a good candidate for a fat transfer, you need to maintain a stable weight for a year, have an area of your body with fat cells to spare, and have no underlying medical conditions that will negatively impact your ability to heal.

For more information about fat transfers, schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic. Dr. Qazi will be able to answer all your questions and determine if you are a good candidate for a fat transfer.

How Do Breast Implants Correct Uneven Breasts?

If you dislike your uneven breasts, implants may be right for you. Breast implants are most commonly used to create volume in the chest for women who have very little breast tissue, have undergone a mastectomy, or are undergoing a gender transition. Breast implants are also able to fix uneven breasts.

One of the biggest benefits of implants over fat transfer is that implants are very easy to customize. This way, you know exactly what your results will look like. When you get breast implants, there are several choices that you have to make:

    1. Type of implant. You have 3 options for your implant: silicone, saline, or gummy bear. Because silicone and gummy bear implants are inserted pre-filled, they can be the best for correcting asymmetry.
    1. The insertion method. How your implants are inserted determines how well hidden your scars will be. The incisions normally fade over time to the point where there is only a small, white line on the skin that is practically invisible to others. Implants can be inserted through an incision in the natural crease of the breast, around the nipple, the belly button, or the armpit.
    1. Implant placement. Implants can be placed over the muscle or under the muscle. This will affect your recovery time and the appearance of your implants.

Who is a good candidate for breast implants?

In general, candidates have to be in good health, have no history of body dysmorphia, and be over the age of 18 or 22 depending on the type of implant they want.

For patients who have uneven breasts, the cause and appearance of your asymmetry will influence if implants are right for you. If your breasts are uneven in terms of size and volume, then implants are an ideal cosmetic solution. However, if your breasts are uneven in terms of droopiness or nipple position, then breast implants are not the best way to fix your uneven breasts.

What is a Breast Lift and How Can it Balance My Breasts?

A breast lift is a medical procedure that addresses sagging, drooping, and downward pointing nipples. The purpose of this procedure is to lift the breasts and remove excess skin. This is not a procedure for increasing the volume of the breasts, but it is an option for you to combine a breast lift with breast implants.

How does a breast lift work?

When you get a breast lift, it will be performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the medical team will trim away extra skin on the breasts that contributes to sagging. The medical team may also reposition the nipple to make your breasts perky again.

After the procedure, patients normally take between 3 and 7 days off work. After 3 weeks, you are safe to return to your normal activities, including strenuous exercise. It normally takes 6 to 12 weeks for your breasts to fully heal. By this time, the incisions should be significantly faded. After 6 months, your breasts will have settled into their final shape and your scars should be adequately healed to not be visible to others.

Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?

Whether or not a breast lift is right for you depends on 3 factors:

      1. The current shape of your breasts. The goal of a breast lift is to restore youth and perkiness to your chest. It is best for women whose breasts droop enough to justify the procedure.
      2. The cause of your asymmetry. If your breasts are uneven due to differences in size or volume, then a breast lift will not be able to help you. Breast lifts are best for women whose breasts are uneven due to different levels of sagging or differing nipple placement.
      3. Your overall health. It is very important that you are healthy enough for a breast lift.

The best way to determine if a breast lift is right for you is to schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic.

      How to Fix Uneven Breasts

Is There a Non-Invasive Alternative to Fix Uneven Breasts?

This is a question that Dr. Qazi gets very frequently. The short answer is “kind of.” The long answer is “not really.” There are things that you can do to make your breasts appear more even, such as:

      • Breast taping
      • Wearing bras with extra padding
      • Stuffing your bra on one side
      • Doing certain chest exercises
      • Dressing to camouflage the difference

These are good temporary solutions if you want to look nice for an important event or a date. However, they are not long term solutions, and can become both costly and time consuming in the long run.

The best way to fix uneven breasts is with either a fat transfer, a breast lift, or breast implants. If you are not currently ready for a procedure to even out your breasts, there are still things you can do to feel less self-conscious about your chest.

What Results Can I Expect After I Fix My Uneven Breasts?

After you get a breast lift, fat transfer, or implants, you can expect your results to be final after 6 months.

If you got implants, it is recommended that you get an MRI in addition to your normal mammograms every few years. Breast implants come with a small risk of rupture or leak, so it is very important to monitor your implants. An MRI can detect silent leaks early so that you can have your implants removed or replaced if necessary.

The results for fat transfers, breast lifts, and breast implants are long-lasting and can be permanent. Your results from your fat transfer or breast lift will not wear off or reverse itself; however, life factors like aging, pregnancy, and weight changes may affect your results in the long term.

For breast implants, most implants last 10 to 15 years depending on the type of implant and how well the patient takes care of it. For some patients, their implants can last longer than 15 years if they are in good health and monitor them carefully. Some patients have their implants removed early due to changing fashion trends or if they want to embrace a natural look.
