The Importance of Jawline Contouring for Both Men and Women

When you hear the word “Jaws”, you normally think of the Steven Spielberg movie that became the first summer blockbuster. But “jawline contouring” is gaining popularity as a non-invasive cosmetic procedure.

After all, there are 43 muscles in your face. You can try to exercise these muscles to keep your jawline tight, but weight gain, a loss of elasticity as we age, double chins, unhealthy diets, and heredity all may cause a less than chiseled jawline.

That is why a quick, effective, in-office procedure is frequently requested by both women patients who want a more “defined jaw”, as well as men who want a more “masculine jaw”. Here’s why…

Why Jaw Contouring Is Important

Jaws, like chins, can be “weak”, “saggy”, or “unflattering”.

If you aren’t in love with your jaw anymore, this treatment may be what you’re looking for. Quite simply, it slims, reshapes and refines your jawline to give it a more pronounced look and feel, provides more balanced features without having to undergo surgery, and creates more separation between your jawline and your neck. Most cosmetic clinics recommend that it’s accomplished through using a variety of FDA-approved injections, medically tested cosmetic injectables such as the globally popular Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, another injectable that’s had great results at reducing wrinkles.

Jawline exercises may be another way to start getting the jawline that you prefer (see below for some jaw exercises). And, of course, some men who don’t want to take the time to improve their looks just grow a beard – and let it keep growing – in an attempt to cover up their jawlines.

Some Famous People Who Had Great Jawlines

Famous actors whose stunning jawlines are admired by many people include Brad Pitt, Henry Cavill (“Superman” in the movies), Ben Affleck (the recent box office “Batman), Johnny Depp, Aaron Paul, Matt Bomer, Chris Hemsworth, as well as soccer star David Beckham.

Female celebrities with notable jawlines are Brad’s ex-wife, Angelina Jolie; Beckham’s wife and ex-Spice Girl, Victoria; actress / TV celebrity Jennifer Lopez; and actress / director Olivia Wilde.

What Does Jawline Contouring Procedure Encompass?

Some people seek this procedure to eliminate their double chin for a more defined jaw. Others want to streamline their jowls that have begun to sag. Maybe a person wants to eliminate more neck fat than they currently have. Occasionally, someone wants what can be best described as a mini jaw lift. And some men bring in a photo of someone famous and say, “I want a jawline just like this guy”.

All of these issues can be addressed with a jaw contouring procedure that:

    • Shapes your jawline
    • Balances your chin, neck and jaw without traditional surgery
    • Creates separation between your neck and jaw
    • Makes subtle adjustments to your jawline
    • Tightens your skin
    • And provides a more youthful look overall.

What Is a Masculine Jaw Procedure?

Some cultures also believe that a larger, more chiseled jawline is a sign of masculinity that attracts other people to you. But it’s not just cultural.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health states that “larger jawbones, more prominent cheekbones, and thinner cheeks are all features of male faces that differentiate them from female faces.”

A more masculine jawline does not require traditional surgery, an implant to look like your chin and / or jaw is made of granite, or an investment of thousands of dollars.

Before and after a jawline filler treatment that was performed at Qazi Cosmetic Center in Newport Beach, California.

While an American Society of Plastic Surgeons study in 2017 revealed that 57% of chin augmentation surgeries were performed on men, a sleeker, more masculine, more chiseled, and more defined jawline is both attainable and affordable.

This type of quick, in-office, minimally invasive procedure with a combination of injectables and dermal fillers can make you look younger, more vibrant, more attractive, thinner, and definitely sexier.

How Botox Can Help Your Jawline

Whether you have a genetic disposition or it’s part of your ethnic background, a “square” face can be altered for the better.

Dr. Nadir at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic and Med Spa in Newport Beach, California, uses a signature technique for Botox and other injectables like Dysport, account for more than seven million injections each year. This is an excellent combination when used to reshape and relax your jaw muscles to create a narrower jawline in women or a stronger jawline in men.

In particular, Botox, also known as Botulinum Toxin A, was first discovered as a FDA-approved intramuscular preventative treatment for chronic migraine headaches in America. It was also the first FDA-approved prescription treatment in 1989 to temporarily improve the appearance of wrinkles above your eyebrows and for crow’s feet. That’s why it’s become the most popular non-surgical wrinkle remover in the world.

When you get a Botox injection for jawline contouring, no anesthesia is required, an office visit typically takes about 15 minutes, there is no downtime, and discomfort is usually minimal

This injectable neurotoxin is also used to treat spasms in your muscles, stop excessive underarm sweating, and is safe compared to more invasive cosmetic procedures.

What Dysport Can Do for Your Defined Jaw

Dysport is another FDA-approved injectable that first was popular in Europe before gaining entry into the U.S. in 2009.

Most often used for softening and smoothing wrinkles in your forehead to achieve more natural-looking results, it is typically used in combination with Botox by Dr. Qazi for shaping and streamlining masseter muscles to create a slimmer feminine face, a more masculine jaw, with a decrease in both jaw clenching and jaw grinding.

As with Botox, no anesthesia is required for a Dysport injection, an office visit usually  takes about 15 minutes, you’ll have no downtime, and discomfort is minimal.

The Benefits of Xeomin for Jaws

The third injectable used by Dr. Qazi at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic is Xeomin, which is the only clinically proven anti-wrinkle injectable uniquely purified to remove unnecessary proteins.

As the brand name for botulinum toxin type A, Xeomin is a prescription medication injected into your muscles and most commonly used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults 18 and older, though it’s become a popular injectable for jaw contouring, too.

It contains a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

      Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects are rare for injections of Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. But after a neurotoxin treatment, you may notice one or more of the following conditions:

      • Swelling
      • Bruising
      • Red puncture marks
      • Asymmetry
      • Soreness
      • Itchiness

      What Are The Jaw-Dropping Results?

A Botox / Xeomin / Dysport treatment can typically only take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. The results can be jaw-dropping when you see the “before” and “after” photos for a slimmer, newer looking you.

Results typically take about two weeks after your initial treatment and can last up to six months for each of these injectables. Because of this, we recommend follow-up visits to maintain an optimal jawline.

What is the Cost for Jaw Contouring?

The cost for any non-invasive cosmetic procedure depends on the number of appointments and the number of vials of the injectables you may need to achieve optimal results for a more masculine jaw in male patients or a more defined jaw in female patients. All of this will be discussed at your initial consultation.

Can Men and Women Benefit from Jaw Contouring?

Definitely! We recommend this non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure as an option to treat stubborn jawline fat and / or double chins for both men and women. That’s why Dr. Qazi is a specialist in jawline contouring.

Aftercare Instructions for A Jawline Procedure.

Dr. Qazi, the founder of Qazi Cosmetic Clinic & Med Spa, takes the time to meet with each patient to discuss treatment options –– before, during, and especially after a procedure. This is particularly important after a neurotoxin treatment where it is typical to notice some swelling, bruising, red puncture marks, asymmetry, soreness, or even itchiness.

Please note that any of these post-injection issues are all common and should resolve themselves in the next few days up to a week or longer, as your final results will usually be seen about two weeks after your treatment.

At that point in time, we can assess whether you will need a further treatment to achieve your aesthetic goals in our Orange County office.

What to avoid after Botox injections:

      • Please do not touch your face for at least six hours; you can then use water and a gentle cleanser.
      • Do not put pressure on the treated area by sleeping on your face or performing any exercises by putting your face below your heart.
      • Do not use a steam room or sauna for at least two weeks.
      • Do not engage in vigorous physical activity for 12 hours.
      • Do not use AHA, Retinols, Vitamin C, or oil-based make-up for 3 days.
      • Do not wash your face with hot water for 3 days.
      • Do not exfoliate your incision site for 5 days.
      • Do not consume alcohol, coffee, or fish oil for 2 days.

What to take for pain relief for jawline contouring:

      • We recommend Tylenol (Acetaminophen) for any discomfort; avoid Ibuprofen or Naproxen for the first 3 days after your procedure.
      • Avoid NSAIDS and other blood thinners which can lead to increased bruising.

What to do about bruising and swelling:

      • If you do experience bruising and swelling for a more defined jaw, which is typical, apply a cool compress or arnica gel.

Follow-up appointment for a more feminine or masculine jaw:

      • Dr. Qazi at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic & Med Spa will review the results of your Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin injections 2 to 4 weeks after your appointment; an earlier appointment will not enable the neurotoxin enough time to fully activate.

What Are Some Jaw Exercises You Can Do at Home?

Some of these exercises may help firm up and tighten your neck, chin, and jaw muscles, but their effects may only last as long as you keep exercising daily. These include:

      • Tongue exercises –– While lying on your back, press your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth, then move your chin towards your chest as you lift your head off your pillow. Do three rounds of this with 10 repetitions for each.
      • Sound out your vowels – Repeat the five vowels loudly and exaggerate each one. Again, do three rounds of 10 repetitions each.
      • Push your jaw – With your mouth closed, push out your lower jaw but keep your face still. 3 rounds, 10 repetitions each.
      • Hum along if you don’t know the words – Like the first exercise, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and hum as you do three rounds of 20 seconds each.
      • Stretch your neck out – While sitting up, close your mouth and again press your tongue against the roof of your mouth, but lift your head towards the ceiling. Count to 10 and hold and do this three times.
