How Much Weight Do You Lose With Liposuction? What You Need To Know About Liposuction

If you have heard the statistic that 95% of diets fail, you are probably thinking to yourself “now what?” Do you know what doesn’t fail? Liposuction. Celebrities from Beyoncé to Jamie Lee Curtis to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can tell you that liposuction works much better than the average diet.

But the real question is: How much weight do you lose with liposuction? Can lipo help me reduce my weight?

The short answer? It’s complicated.

What is Liposuction and How Does It Work?

Liposuction – also called lipo for short – is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. It is a safe method of removing stubborn fat cells that do not respond to other weight loss attempts. The procedure utilizes small incisions in order to reduce recovery times and prevent scarring.

While there are many different forms of liposuction, including tumescent and laser-assisted lipo, the procedure is essentially the same across the board:

  1. You will undergo either general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the needs of the procedure. Most procedures can be done under local anesthesia. During the procedure, your vitals are monitored and medication adjustments are made as needed to ensure your safety.
  2. The treatment area is first cleaned and prepared for treatment.
  3. A small incision is made in a strategic location to provide maximum results to the treatment area. The location of the incision depends on what areas you want treated.
  4. A cannula, which is a medical suction wand, is then used to vacuum out fat cells.
  5. Dr. Qazi’s preferred method of liposuction involves Vaser ultrasound, which uses a probe to melt fat cells. Those fat cells are then carefully suctioned out of the body.
  6. The small incisions are then stitched up and bandaged. In some cases, the incisions may be temporarily left open in order to allow fluids to drain. This is normal and is more common for tumescent liposuction.
  7. You will receive compression garments to wear over the treatment areas. It is necessary to wear these compression garments for a few weeks after the procedure. They will reduce swelling and ensure that everything heals properly.
  8. During your recovery, you may require temporary surgical drains to prevent fluid build up under the skin.
  9. You will receive post-care instructions, including how to change the dressings and what activities to avoid. You will also receive some prescriptions to manage pain, inflammation, and reduce risk of infection.
  10. A followup visit will be required, depending on the type of stitches used. Recovery can take several months and then you will see the full results in the treated areas.

Liposuction can safely be used on the abdomen, upper arms, back, buttocks, calves, ankles, chest, hips, thighs, chin, and neck. In some cases, it can also be used for breast reduction and for treating gynecomastia – a condition that causes enlarged breast tissue in men due to an imbalance in estrogen levels.

How Much Weight Do You Lose With Liposuction?

One common misconception about liposuction is that it is a magical solution that can remove a significant amount of weight from the body. However, that is not actually true. Most patients only lose about 2 to 5 pounds total. This is why the best candidates are already within 30% of a healthy weight for them and just need a little more help losing a few localized, fatty pockets.

In order to understand why this is the case, there are a few things to understand about how liposuction and weight loss work. Once you reach adulthood, the number of fat cells in the body is already set. It is unlikely that you will gain more fat cells, unless in the case of extreme weight gain due to medical issues. Lipo and other forms of weight loss, like exercise and lifestyle changes, affect these fat cells differently.

Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells by physically removing them, which is what causes a size reduction to certain areas of the body. Once removed, those fat cells are unlikely to come back.

Weight loss, on the other hand, reduces the size of fat cells, which causes certain areas of the body to appear smaller and for your weight to be lower than before.

Can Lipo Help Me Reduce My Weight?

The short answer is not exactly.

This is to say that liposuction is not designed to be a weight loss procedure. It is not intended to dramatically lower your weight. Liposuction is actually a contouring procedure that can address problem areas and smooth out minor lumps and bumps.

While that may sound discouraging, keep in mind that overall body size and most pockets of stubborn fat are genetically determined. This makes it very challenging to lose significant amounts of weight and to shed fat in areas like the stomach, thighs, arms, and sides.

What Dr. Qazi recommends is to embrace a little #bodypositivity. And if you still can’t stand having some extra lumps and bumps, don’t worry! Liposuction can help smooth those out and let you return to being your beautiful, confident self.

For some patients, liposuction can help them to lose weight on their own. After patients see the results, they are more confident, which can lead them to take up new hobbies and ditch bad habits. Many people have been inspired to take up swimming, stop doing crash diets, take dance classes, or stop binge eating out of stress. These lipo-inspired lifestyle changes can lead to further weight loss!

Recommendations From Dr. Qazi – Lipo or Microlipo?

Microlipo is just what it sounds like: a non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to liposuction that is suitable for removing small pockets of fat on the body, chin, and face. Microlipo is ideal because it does not involve invasive surgery, result in surgical scars, or come with extended downtime. Dr. Nadir Qazi normally combines Microlipo with Renuvion to tighten loose skin at the same time.

Liposuction is primarily for body contouring, rather than weight loss. Microlipo is too – it is just the non-invasive option for removing smaller amounts of fat.

If you are asking “microlipo or lipo? Which is right for me?” Here is Dr. Nadir Qazi’s advice:

    1. Always try to do the non-surgical option if possible. Because surgical procedures carry greater risk and have more side effects, you should always go for a non-surgical option. Not only are non-surgical procedures safer, they also involve less risk of scarring and require less recovery time.

With liposuction, it can take up to 6 weeks for the swelling to go down and several months to see results. In contrast, microlipo results will be visible within a few days and  the swelling goes down within a week.

    1. Depending on your cosmetic concerns, what area of the body you want to treat, your budget, and your availability for recovery, liposuction may be a better option for you than Microlipo. The best way to find out which procedure will be best for you is to schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic. Once you discuss your goals with Dr. Qazi, he will be able to make a recommendation for a customized treatment.

If he deems surgical liposuction to be the best means of achieving your goals, the procedure can be performed in-house by Dr. Qazi’s team of experienced plastic surgeons.

      Frequently Ask Questions About Liposuction

How Can I Prepare for Liposuction?

There are several things that you can do to ensure that you get the best results.

First, you can keep your weight stable in the months before your procedure. This is important because if your weight goes up or down by more than 10 pounds, then your results can be lost. Some ways to keep your weight stable include: avoiding crash diets and any extreme diet changes, participating in a form of exercise that you enjoy, and being aware of potential side effects from medications.

When you have your consultation with Dr. Qazi, he will give you other instructions for how to prepare. These may include getting lab tests or medical evaluations done, adjusting your medications, stopping use of nicotine products, and avoiding the use of aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Before the procedure, you should also make arrangements to ease your recovery.

This includes finding someone to drive you to and from the procedure, arranging for a friend to look after you the night after, and adjusting your workload to accommodate for your recovery.

How Long Do The Results Last? How Can I Maintain My Results?

Once fat cells are surgically removed from the body, they are essentially gone forever. Your body will not make new fat cells to replace the ones that were removed, so those results are permanent. However, the remaining fat cells can still grow and shrink in size as before, so it is possible to regain weight in those areas.

Factors like natural aging, pregnancy, and medical problems can cause you to regain fat in the treated areas. Sadly, these things cannot be avoided. As we age, it is natural for our bodies to change and for the metabolism to slow down. Similarly, pregnancy requires some weight gain in order for the body to grow a healthy baby.

That said, there are ways to maintain your results for as long as possible. The most important thing you can do is to stay physically active and maintain a healthy relationship with food.

      Is Liposuction Suitable For Men?

Yes! Dr. Qazi sees a significant number of male patients at his Orange County office. Many men undergo liposuction in order to achieve the body that they want. Even many male celebrities have opened up about the procedure, including Kanye West and  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. If you want to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat on your chest, back, waist, legs, or abdomen, contact Qazi Cosmetic Clinic to schedule a consultation!

Is There a Weight or Age Limit For Liposuction?

No, as long as your weight is stable and you are in good health, you are a candidate for liposuction. While it is important to understand that liposuction is not intended as a procedure for weight loss, it can still be effective at treating problem areas no matter the size of your body.

Typically, younger people do better with surgical cosmetic treatments because they bounce back quicker. Older patients may have to worry more about loose skin as a side effect of liposuction because skin naturally loses elasticity with age.

      Can Liposuction Help Reduce Cellulite?

Because cellulite is caused by the way that subcutaneous fat pushes through connective tissue bands, rather than the existence of fat itself, lipo cannot reduce cellulite. However, Qazi Cosmetic Clinic offers a variety of options for safe and effective cellulite treatments. The best method for reducing cellulite is Dr. Qazi’s signature California Butt Lift™. This procedure involves safely injecting a dermal filler into the superficial layers of skin on the butt and thighs. Both Sculptra and Radiesse are safe fillers that can improve the texture of your skin by boosting collagen production, adding volume, and smoothing out cellulite dimples on the skin.

What Are the Side Effects of Liposuction?

Common side effects include: Bruising and swelling, changes in skin sensation, fluid accumulation, numbness, irregular contours or asymmetries, slight change to skin pigmentation, loose skin, worsened cellulite, and risk of poor wound healing.

Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, there are also medical risks to be aware of. These include: Skin infection, internal punctures, fat embolism, kidney or heart problems, and Lidocaine toxicity.

The best way to stay safe during the procedure is to follow all pre-procedure instructions and to only receive procedures from experience, board-certified cosmetic surgeons and physicians. Dr. Qazi and his team of Orange County plastic surgeons provide his patients with the best care for all their surgical and non-surgical needs.
