When it comes to aging, it isn’t all about the face. The neck can also give away age with wrinkles and sagging skin. This is why patients who want to look younger should consider getting a neck lift as well as a facelift.
A surgical neck lift is designed to tighten, smooth, and contour the neck by removing excess fat, skin, tissue, and banding that forms with age. There are two types of neck rejuvenation that go into a neck lift: the first targets the area under the chin where sagging skin and fat can form and create the appearance of a double chin. The second targets the rest of the neck to remove drooping skin.
How do I know if I need neck lift surgery?
There is no recommended age at which someone should get a neck lift because everyone’s necks age differently. A neck lift is recommended for patients who do not like the appearance of their neck or jawline. The best way to know if a neck lift is right for you is to schedule a consultation at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic.
Who is a good candidate for a surgical neck lift?
Anyone who is in overall good health who wants to reduce the size of their chin or get rid of sagging skin is a good candidate for a neck lift. The ideal candidate is someone who has a positive mindset about their procedure and realistic expectation about the results. Patients should be prepared to quit smoking before the procedure and be prepared for the recovery afterwards.
Are there non-surgical options for improving the appearance of my neck?
Yes! Surgery is not right for everyone. Patients who do not have severe enough cosmetic concerns to justify surgery may prefer a non-surgical alternative. Qazi Cosmetic Clinic offers several non-invasive procedures, including Kybella, Botox, dermal fillers, laser anti-aging treatment, and RF microneedling. These procedures can reduce the size of the chin and get rid of wrinkles on the neck without the downtime of surgery.
What can I do to prepare for the procedure?
Patients should avoid anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin and ibuprofen, stop taking certain blood thinning supplements, and abstain from smoking or drinking alcohol. It is also recommended that patients cease the use of Retin-A creams and Accutane at least 5 days before the surgery.
Can I combine other cosmetic surgical procedures with a neck lift?
Yes! Most plastic surgeons recommend combining a neck lift with a brow lift or facelift in order to make the results look as natural as possible. Combining multiple anti-aging treatments allows for a complete transformation where neither the neck nor the face give away a person’s age.
How long until I see my results?
Immediately after the procedure, the results will be obscured by some bruising and swelling. It can take up to 2 weeks for the results to be visible. Most patients are fully healed by the 3rd week after surgery, at which time they can enjoy their new look.
Is a neck lift permanent?
A neck lift is permanent in that the results will not wear off. However, some patients require a second “refresher” neck lift 10 to 15 years down the line. While the results are permanent, factors like gravity, sun exposure, and smoking can damage the skin after the neck lift and cause new wrinkles to form. Patients who take good care of their skin are able to enjoy their results longer than patients who do not.
What can I expect during the recovery after a neck lift?
Tightness or soreness can be expected immediately after a neck lift. Other normal symptoms include numbness, tingling, swelling, and bruising. Patients are encouraged to walk as soon as they are able to keep their blood flowing, which will prevent blood clots.
For the first 2 weeks, patients should refrain from strenuous exercise, alcohol, smoking, sun exposure, heavy housework, steam baths, saunas, and hair treatments. It is safe to resume exercise and regular activities 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Is a neck lift suitable for men?
Yes! Neck lifts are great for men who want to slim their necks and get rid of sagging skin and wrinkles.
Will I have visible scars after the procedure?
The surgical team at Qazi Cosmetic Clinic usually makes incisions under the chin and behind the ears in order to hide them. The incisions used for the procedure are small and will be barely noticeable once they heal. Most patients do not have visible scars after the procedure.
Will neck lift surgery be painful?
No, the entire surgical procedure is done under general anesthesia. After the procedure, some discomfort near the treatment area in the form of itching, soreness, and tightness is normal. Pain medications can be used to mitigate the discomfort.
