Also called a “nose job,” rhinoplasty surgery is a procedure that reshapes the nose to balance the proportions of the face. A rhinoplasty is commonly used to treat visible lumps, depressions in the bridge, an enlarged nose tip, an oversized nose, large nostrils, and nasal asymmetry. This procedure may also be necessary for patients who have a deviated septum, and who require correction to restore the flow of breathing.
Qazi Cosmetic Clinic offers rhinoplasty surgery for both cosmetic and functional reasons. It is completely normal to have a nose that does not quite match the rest of the face. There are no health concerns associated with this condition, but it can cause poor self-esteem and feelings of self-consciousness.
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery?
A good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery is anyone who does not like the shape or size of their nose. Patients must have a fully developed nose, and be adequately healthy for surgery. This procedure is performed for both aesthetic and medical reasons. Patients who have difficulty breathing due to septum deviation should absolutely get a rhinoplasty to correct their nasal cavity.
Is rhinoplasty surgery suitable for men?
Yes. A nose job is suitable for men of all ages who do not like the shape of their nose.
Is there an age limit for a nose job?
Rhinoplasty surgery can only be performed on patients whose noses are fully developed. The lower age limit for the procedure is 15 or 16 in girls and 17 or 18 in boys. Younger patients should have the guidance of their parents and their pediatrician before they consider or receive a rhinoplasty.
There is no upper age limit for getting rhinoplasty. Older patients must be adequately healthy to handle the procedure.
What causes irregularities in the nose?
Conditions like bumps in the bridge, large nostrils, and nasal asymmetry are most often genetic. Patients are usually born with these conditions. It is possible for the nose to become larger with age, and other conditions like rosacea can contribute to the bulbous shape of the nose. Trauma to the face, such as a broken nose, can also cause the nose to appear asymmetrical.
What can I expect during the procedure for a rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. During a nose job, the surgeon will strategically reshape the nose by trimming away extra cartilage or adding cartilage that is taken from deep inside the nose. If necessary, extra cartilage or bone may be taken from the ear area to be grafted onto the nose. The surgical team can also correct the airways and resize the nostrils for easier breathing.
How can I prepare for a rhinoplasty?
To prepare for rhinoplasty, patients are instructed to stop taking certain medications, avoid tobacco and alcohol, and avoid excessive sun exposure. The surgical team may instruct patients to get a physical or to have bloodwork done to ensure they are in good health. The night before the procedure, patients will be instructed to stop eating at midnight and to wash their face in a certain way.
Can I combine a rhinoplasty with other cosmetic procedures?
Yes, it is very common to combine a rhinoplasty with another cosmetic procedure. At Qazi Cosmetic Clinic, patients commonly combine a rhinoplasty with facial implants, eyelid surgery, ear pinning, chin liposuction, a brow lift, facial fat transfer, or a neck lift.
Is rhinoplasty surgery painful?
Rhinoplasty surgery is always performed under general anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable. Some discomfort during the recovery is normal, but it can be managed with medication.
What are the side effects associated with a rhinoplasty?
Every surgical procedure comes with side effects. For a nose job, the possible side effects include: difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, visible scars, changes to sensation, numbness, and nose asymmetry.
How long until I see my results after a nose job?
Most patients are fully healed within 4 to 6 weeks. Certain effects, like numbness, can linger for up to a year. After a year, the results are final.
What can I expect for the recovery after a nose job?
After the surgery, patients must wear a splint on the nose for at least a week. Patients are instructed to sleep sitting up, avoid touching the treatment area, and to refrain from blowing their nose. Most patients are able to return to work or school within a week.
Activities including strenuous activity, excessive facial expression, wearing glasses, and swimming must be avoided until the treatment area heals. Numbness, swelling, and discoloration will dissipate within 4 to 6 weeks.
