The tummy tuck surgery has consistently been one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the US for men and women alike. The procedure has evolved considerably in the last decade, making it even more safe and effective.
Also called abdominoplasty surgery, the tummy tuck is a surgical procedure used to thin and transform the waistline. Unlike liposuction, it provides an overall transformation by reducing the size of the waist considerably. In addition to correcting loose skin and excess fat, the procedure also tightens the fascia muscles on the abdomen wall to reverse stretching caused by weight gain.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
A good candidate for a tummy tuck is anyone who is close to their ideal weight and who has loose skin on the stomach, pockets of excess fat, and separation of the muscles in the abdomen wall. It is best if patients are non-smokers.
Tummy tucks are not recommended for people who have other health concerns, are currently pregnant or may become pregnant, have a history of adverse reactions to anesthesia, or who have a condition that impacts their ability to heal after surgery.
Can a tummy tuck help me lose weight?
A tummy tuck is not intended as a means of losing a significant amount of weight. The purpose of a tummy tuck is to address remaining deposits of stubborn belly fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. This surgery can also be used as a treatment for people who have excess loose skin or who have stretched out their abdominal wall.
How is a tummy tuck different from liposuction?
Liposuction is a less invasive surgical procedure that is designed to treat only small pockets of fat. It removes fat cells out of small, targeted areas in order to subtly contour the body. The recovery is shorter because it is less invasive.
A tummy tuck is designed for completely transforming the waistline. When a surgeon performs a tummy tuck, they remove loose skin and fat, and tighten the muscles in the abdomen. A tummy tuck is recommended over liposuction for patients who have loose skin on their bellies and who need more contouring than liposuction alone can provide.
Can men get a tummy tuck?
Yes! Tummy tucks are not just for women. This procedure is ideal for men who want to improve the appearance of their waists. A tummy tuck is recommended for men who lost weight on their own, who have excess skin or lingering fat on the stomach.
How can I prepare for my procedure?
After the consultation, Dr Qazi and the surgical team will provide customized instructions on how to prepare for a tummy tuck. Patients may need to get additional lab tests to ensure that they are healthy enough for surgery. All patients are advised to stop taking blood-thinners, anti-anxiety medications, and certain herbal supplements before surgery.
What will the recovery after a tummy tuck be like?
It can take 4 to 6 weeks to recover after a tummy tuck. A support garment must be worn for the first 2-3 weeks. Patients are also instructed to avoid strenuous physical activity for several weeks and to only eat easily digestible food. After 6 weeks, patients can resume all normal activities, including exercise.
How long until I see my results?
A change to the size and shape of the abdomen may be noticeable immediately after the tummy tuck, but the full results will be obscured by swelling and bruising. Most patients are able to see their results after 6 weeks; however, it can take up to 6 months for the results to be final.
Will I have visible scarring after a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is a very involved procedure, so most patients experience a small amount of scarring. However, there are some ways to reduce the appearance of tummy scars. The first is to only receive a tummy tuck from an experienced team of surgeons. Other methods to prevent scarring include: walking around, not smoking, maintaining a healthy diet, and not bending, and applying vitamin E to the scars.
Can I combine a tummy tuck with other cosmetic procedures?
Yes! A tummy tuck is often combined with breast augmentation for a complete “mommy makeover.” Men can also combine a tummy tuck with other surgeries, including liposuction, an arm lift, fat transfer, or chin liposuction.
What are the risks and side effects of getting a tummy tuck?
Many patients report that it feels like their stomach is being pulled away when they stand or straighten up. The most common symptom is lingering numbness, bruising, and a fluid-filled swelling near the scar that will go away on its own. Less common risks and side effects include: infection, respiratory problems, blood clotting, adverse reactions to anesthesia, and asymmetry.
Are the results of a tummy tuck permanent?
Yes, the results of a tummy tuck are permanent, so they won’t wear off over time. Once the fat and loose skin is removed from the abdomen, it will likely not come back. However, gaining weight or becoming pregnant again may reverse the results of the tummy tuck by stretching out the abdominal muscles and skin. Patients may require a second tummy tuck in the case of another pregnancy.
